This is no ordinary muscle car decked out with a competition look – this 2008 Ford Mustang GT FR500C is an unabashed race car configured for liquefying rubber only on the track. As opposed to its Mustang FR stablemates, you’ll find no body add-ons to enhance its performance – its prowess on the track is solely the result of the precise engineering that went into configuring this exceptional performer that offers the options of either serving as a fitting centerpiece in your car collection or as a worthy turnkey entrant in Grand Am Cup competition.
While a Mustang GT sighting is no rare occasion, you can see right away that this FR500C clearly stands apart – despite it not sporting a jumbo-size spoiler or dramatic front air dam. Its stance is lowered, and the collection of sponsor emblems and other visual identification its white body carries links this special car to the competition it’s specifically built for. It’s a look many of its competitors only saw from behind, as the FR500C collected quite a bit of trophy hardware during its tenure. This specimen has been carefully protected as it’s served as fully operational eye-candy for show displays over the years, after debuting with just it’s tuning laps under its belt, so its paint is looking as fresh as can be, with decals that still have the same sharp edges and vibrant coloring they started off with. Set it on a display turntable and let the gawking begin, or turn it loose on the track and experience its magic. Your choice.
The adapted interior is another clue that this is no ordinary Mustang. In the interest of cutting unnecessary weight, any excess not having a purpose in competition – either for safety sake or for enhancing performance – has been removed, so there’s no carpeting, sound deadening or door panels to be found. A NHRA-certified competition cage surrounds you for rollover protection and a collapsing steering column and specially designed wheel sit in place of their factory counterparts. The familiar gauges still have their places in the dash area, but an AIM digital data system is entrusted with relaying essential race-time information to the driver and an assembly of switches labeled with their function occupy the center panel. A single Sparco racing bucket, with its 6-point safety harness makes up the entirety of the seating – you don’t see ride-alongs in actual competition, after all – and the 4-liter, cable-activated fire extinguisher mounted in back is yet another reminder of this Mustang’s serious intent.
You’ll find a 5.0-liter R50 engine sitting under the hood that’s fed by a high-flow intake system and provides 400 horsepower. The specially-built powerplant teams with a rock-solid Tremec T56 6-speed manual transmission and a 3.55 ratio Track Tek C-Locker rear end to propel this lightweight Pony – weighing just a touch over 3,000 lbs. – around the track. A special C&R aluminum radiator equipped with an integrated oil cooler is tasked with keeping temperatures down, despite the rigors of racing exertion. The 4-wheel coilover suspension is adjustable for ride height, compression and rebound and the 4-wheel disc brake system you’d find on a stock GT has been augmented with upgraded components at all four corners. Limited use has left the undercarriage in very clean shape. This race-bred Pony will scream around the track on its set of 18″ x 10″ Fiske wheels, outfitted with Hoosier tires.
Whether serving as an ultimate automotive centerpiece or plying its intended trade in competition, this 2008 Ford Mustang GT FR500C is a very rare find.
